King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Recently I visited an artist I’ve heard about but never got around to listening to. The band is King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, who add neo-psychedelic tones to simple ideas. I listened to their 2015 album, Paper Mache Dream Balloon.
On first glance the album is filled to the brim with simplistic, nonsensical lyrics. Upon my first listen of the album I was entranced by their hypnotic sound that was calming but seemed to hide something. I listened to the album again and listened to the lyrics, then I realized that all the upbeat tunes hide some of the most nihilistic and depressing themes. Most songs on the album revolve around the concept of death. Some easy examples are songs like, “Cold Cadaver” and, “Time = Fate.” Other tracks are a bit harder to decipher, but once deciphered they leave you in shock. A good example of that is the second song on the album, “Bone.”
The simplistic and dare I say happy sounding acoustic guitar makes the atmosphere very friendly and inviting. The album is hauntingly beautiful with its light-hearted acoustics and vocals, but dark and daunting lyrics.
This album taught me to not take things for face value. It sounds happy, but has very dark and disturbing meanings. The cover of the album is vibrant and looks like a Claymation, suitable for all ages so it seems. Then pulls you in with the jazzy tune of ‘Sense.” It’s an experience to say the least. Go check out this album, you will not regret it. I assure you, it’s worth your time.
