2016 Author Visit

Lydia Simms

Although many students have read Not a Drop to Drink and its sequel, few have had the honor of meeting the author herself, Mindy McGinnis.

Ms. McGinnis comes to GHS on October 27, and she will present to the Library Media students, English 11 AP students, and English 9 Honors students. Ms. McGinnis will also be having lunch with the staff.

Mrs. Julia Reynolds, media specialist, said, “Any students who are not in these classes who are interested in meeting Mindy should come see me.” Mrs. Reynolds is available in the media center during school hours.

McGinnis will discuss her process of writing and her books Not a Drop to Drink, In a Handful of Dust, and A Madness so Discreet.

I have found them so well-written and very engaging,” Mrs. Reynolds said. “They are suitable for males and females with realistic characters and intense plotlines. Sometimes, books, especially dystopian and post-apocalyptic, can become formulaic, but I’ve found Mindy’s books to be very original.”

Mrs. Reynolds set up the visit, and she has done so for several author visits.

“I’m always on the lookout for enjoyable books with authors available to visit,” said Mrs. Reynolds. “Mindy lives in Ohio, so I knew the possibility of her visiting was high, and it all fell into place from there.”

She added, “I love for students to meet authors and ask thought-provoking questions about their books. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many students, so I want them to make the most of it. Learn about author writing processes, publishing world secrets, and the stories behind the writing of the books. Author visits are my favorite day of the year, and I want that to be true for students, too.”
